The Prince of Texas
/
Devin Johnson, rather POT or The Prince of Texas, formally the average troubled youth. He was adopted at the age of 18 months by his aunt, later to become his mother. As a young boy POT lived in Park Village, formerly known as East Village, a small area along with neighboring north east side and east side areas of San Antonio where crime was rising at a new high. While nurturing his grandfather as he slowly passed away from cancer, POT grew fond of the highlights and tendencies that he observed within his ghetto and began to take an interest as he grew older. As years went by POT had sold just enough drugs to eat and stunt as if he had something of value, but upon his father’s return from prison he was given an ultimatum; continue a negative lifestyle on the streets, or pursue a prosperous lifestyle with less liability. A change had to be made in order to survive.
At age 16, POT got a part-time job working at the Sonic Drive in on Marbach Road near his high school, but although he was removed from the ghetto he couldn’t let go of his negative lifestyle and continued to sell drugs during high school. POT began to focus on his interest in poetry, to which he even got published several times in school magazine articles. While in his final year of high school he met Brandon Perez, an aspiring audio engineer and producer, and together they started the Music Production Club at John Jay High School as a way to focus on the creation of music with their fellow peers. During this time Brandon and POT created their first song called “Fancy Cars”, which became a hit with their peers. With the positive feedback they received from the song POT wondered if they could possibly have a future in music.
By age 19, POT had graduated from high school with a full time job working for Sonic drive in and had even marketed for several companies too. It was here that his old habits began to catch up to him. His manager received a tip that made her suspicious of him selling drugs out of the store and to other employees, this caused him to eventually loose his job. POT was a pretty smart kid, and he realized that there's nothing wrong with being an entrepreneur, however he did need to change his product if he wanted to succeed.
As years passed, POT had grown to have experience in the finance field selling credit cards as well as prepaid legal services. He had even once been a personal shoe technician. Life was full of ups and downs and at one point POT had been homeless and lived pillar to post out of his car, even selling bottled water on the streets to survive. With persistence he found a new job selling gold with Karat Bars International and new faith in the Moslem religion. With the help of some friends he began to look at life in a more positive manner.
POT began to see that entrepreneurship and music were his only paths to success, his harsh circumstances were either going to make him or break him. At this point all he had were a few beats on a cd from Brandon, a few wise cracks, his lyrical skills, and nothing to lose.
“Music has always been a passion for me, and through my pain and desires as an adolescent to an adult I managed to develop a unique style and rhythm unlike any other before. One which
includes subliminal and direct hints and guidelines to my own personal path to financial and
spiritual freedom.” -The Prince of Texas, 2019
